The FistFull of Talent Recruiter Recharge series continues with a video interview featuring LANdesk’s Chris Brown, Director of Global Talent Acquisition. Our host, the notorious Kris Dunn, chats with Chris via Skype about the his opinions regarding hiring great recruiters. Chris nails it – “look for people that are willing to work hard.”

Commentary

As a former professional athlete, Chris knows a thing or two about working hard and being disciplined.  Chris, like many of us, fell into a career in recruiting and used what he learned on the soccer field to become a successful recruiting leader. Working hard and smart are two things that seem so logical for any professional, especially a pro athlete. Yet it seems like we can easily lose sight of these attributes when we think about hiring and mentoring recruiters. In short, recruiting is plain hard work. It’s imperative to hire recruiters that understand the concept of working hard. For people to be pros they have to act and work like pros. Chris do you know any of your former teammates that want to hang up the cleats for a mouse and a phone?

As I think through the first installment of the Recruiter Recharge series, I notice a distinct trend. The people that we have met during this first series of Recruiter Recharge, Kris Dunn, Jason Pankow and Chris Brown, all have something in common. These are recruiting leaders that are “out there” AND they successfully manage teams, recruiting projects and can still fill jobs in their sleep (Jason – you know you still have it). These guys possess the self-confidence to put themselves “out front”. They are flexible enough to play diverse roles and still find time to manage their responsibilities. And, they are focused in such a way that they have emerged to the top of their game. The do work – pro-level work. Catching a theme here?.  Plus, I know all of these folks personally now. This is a resourceful bunch. Give them an internet connection and there is nothing that they can’t accomplish.

The recruiting industry is evolving for sure and it will continue to do so. More Charlatans from outside the industry will continue to swoop in and try to “revolutionize” this piece or that piece. Many newbies will continue to spend more time tweeting and self-promoting than recruiting. And, jobs will continue to become more data and knowledge intensive leading to ever more complicated recruiting projects. However, some things won’t change. Good recruiters will still be self-confident, flexible, focused, resourceful professionals that aren’t afraid to lift the phone during the day and put in those hours anywhere they can find them in between to get the job done.
